This initiative tallies with the Federal Government’s approach In domesticating the designs of the national housing types to reflect the social-cultural dynamics of our people…government is therefore disposed in supporting any initiative such as this one aimed at bridging the national housing deficiency – Prof Yemi Osinbajo, Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria

PRO-POOR DESIGNED

Our model is pro-poor, focused on the poorer groups in the informal sector, the low-income urban poor, and affordable students hostel at public tertiary institutions in Nigeria. We created a Social Equity Fund to serve as a suitable “leading basket”  to enhance access to affordable housing for bottom 40% of our population (poorer class). This intervention is made effective through the instrument of home microfinance, using cooperative housing approach.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

A nation cannot develop unless its housing sector thrives. Affordable and adequate housing has a strong link to human security and safety, and it is a significant determinant in the metrics of the standard of living and welfare of citizens of the nation.

HOME MICRO-FINANCE (HMF)

BFN model is delivered through cooperatives and home micro finance (HMF). Home microfinance refers to small value, non-mortgage loans for the purposes of home improvement, renovations and incremental building for the  low income in the informal sector. It is a practical strategy that helps to provide adequate shelter and respect the needs of the urban poor.HMF is a critical success factor for boosting self-built housing supply in developing countries.

WHERE WE ARE HEADING

The model which is promoted by the Committee of vice-chancellors of Nigerian Universities-CVC is designed to enhance access to decent and low-cost housing for the bottom 40 percent of Nigeria population and provide affordable hostel accommodation for student at public tertiary institution in Nigeria. The focus of the housing program is to intervene in the informal market using home microfinance (HMF) instruments to boost supply of self-build housing stock for the low-income and urban poor. The program embarks on innovative financing initiative to build social equity fund to finance the pro-poor intervention

The partnership now serves as the government intervention platform to address the housing needs of the urban poor, the low-income in the informal sector and provide decent and affordable hostel at all Nigeria public tertiary intuitions.

The build for Nigeria platform has created a huge opportunity for professional in building, construction, urban development, housing finance, facility management, cooperatives, artisans, University administrators and equity investors.
